It is frequently observed that some astrologers diagnose Pitra Dosh in a horoscope even when it is not actually present. One reason for this could be a mistaken diagnosis resulting from a lack of experience. The definition of Pitra Dosh is quite extensive; simply identifying an affliction of the Sun or Moon by malefic planets in the horoscope is not sufficient to declare the presence of Pitra Dosh. Doing so creates confusion. It is akin to starting medical treatment without correctly identifying the actual illness in the body. In such a scenario, no matter how many remedies are performed, they will yield no benefit. Therefore, the first step is to ascertain whether *Pitra Dosh* actually exists in the birth chart. Once its presence is confirmed, one must determine the specific type whether it is Pitra Dosh related to the male (Purush Pitra dosh) and female (Stri Pitra Dosh).
Difference between Male and Female Pitra Dosh
A horoscope can contain various forms or planetary combinations (Yogas) indicating Pitra Dosh. Pitra Dosh should be considered present only when more than one such combination exists; otherwise, its impact on the individual's life is either negligible or non-existent. As I have previously noted, Pitra Dosh combinations in a birth chart arise in two ways: Purush Pitra Dosh (male) and Stree Pitra Dosh (female). Each has distinct definitions and planetary combinations, and they should never be assessed collectively. Once the presence of Pitra Dosh is established, the specific type must be identified. A comprehensive study of the birth chart is required to determine the extent of the affliction's impact and the specific lineage or direction associated with it. It is also important to remember that no planetary combination remains active throughout one's entire life; its influence may intensify, diminish, or even vanish completely depending on the planetary periods (Dasha and Antardasha).
How Purush Pitra Dosh (Male) is Formed
Purush Pitra Dosh arises when the ninth house, the zodiac sign Leo, and the Sun are afflicted in a birth chart. To understand this in detail: the affliction occurs when the Sun is compromised and the ninth house is under the influence of malefic planets. For instance, this happens if the lord of the ninth house is aspected by or conjunct with inauspicious and malefic planets. One must also examine the Sun's zodiac sign and its degree of placement. If the Sun is positioned between 7 and 22 degrees, the impact of Purush Pitra Dosh is significantly reduced. Similarly, if the Sun is in Aries, Leo, or Scorpio, it possesses the inherent power to neutralize Purush Pitra Dosh.
How Stree Pitra Dosh (Female) is Formed
Stree Pitra Dosh arises when the Moon, the zodiac sign Cancer, and the fourth house are under malefic influence in a birth chart. Examples include when the Moon is waning (diminishing in phases) or simply put, when the birth occurs close to the Amavasya (New Moon) tithi—or when the Moon is placed in a sign ruled by malefic planets or is weak in terms of degrees. These planetary combinations can generally be categorized as Stree Pitra Dosh. Furthermore, if the fourth house and the sign Cancer are also influenced by malefic planets, the intensity of Stree Pitra Dosh increases.
Remedies for Pitra Dosh
Once it is confirmed that your birth chart contains Pitra Dosh, the following remedies can help appease the ancestors:
1. Although our scriptures designate the 16 days of Shraddh Paksha specifically for appeasing ancestors, performing the Shraddh ritual correctly eliminates the need for any other remedy.
2. Water should be offered to the ancestors on every Amavasya. There is no better remedy than this for pacifying Pitra Dosh. This is why, in traditional households, the designated space for ancestors is often located near the water source.
3. On every Amavasya, food items made from white rice or milk should be offered to the ancestors. This should be performed only if Pitra Dosh is present in the horoscope. Under normal circumstances, performing Shraddha and offering water is sufficient.
4. The Tripindi Shraddha ritual should be organized at a pilgrimage site or a cremation ground.
